I painted this version at the stream over several months in 2007, starting it in late April, continuing it in August, and then reworking the painting in early 2008. All of the elements were flowing together, rocks, water, trees, circling around the dramatic bend.

In June 2007, in the middle of working on the Change of Course series, I had helped my brother finish an elaborate labyrinth of flat stepping stones in Alaska. That structure, spiralling to the center and out again, kept resonating with my ideas for completing this painting as well as others in the series.
